Troopy modifications

OK So the vehicle is our first major list – green stuff is done, red stuff is yet to do:

  • Take measurements from the interior of the Troopy to start the plans for converting to a motorhome.
  • Mechanical – Rebuild the engine and replace the cracked cylinder head
  • Rebuild the diesel pump and dyno tune
  • Fit reco high flow injectors
  • Purchase 6 x new tyres – spec being BFG MT KM2 265/75/16 (leaving 2 further Sunrasia spares). The rims are 16/7 so this tyre size seems to be more widely available than others in various countries.
  • Modify the running boards/side rails – Jerome can’t wheel his chair right up to the side of the Troopy to transfer onto the seat as the rails stick out too much. So we will cut out a section in front of each door and refit to make things easier.
  • Rebuild the steering knuckles, seals and bearings
  • Replace all wheel bearings and seals
  • Fit a Detroit TrueTrac LSD to the front diff and a Detroit Locker to the rear diff
  • Machine all brake discs
  • Fit all new tie road and track rod ends
  • Fit a Tough Dog 4-way RTC steering damper
  • Fit Tough Dog Big Bore foam cell shocks & suitable weight leaf springs
  • Modify the rear axle studs and replace the dowels and cones – Currently there are just 2 x 6mm dowels that help drive the wheel hubs, so we are changing that to 4 x 10mm dowels and replacing the studs and cones to reduce the chance of anything snapping with the locked diff fitted.
  • Fit new intercooler
  • Fit new digital pyrometer and Speco Boost Gauge
  • Rebuild the winch (taken from the sold Patrol), seals, replace the rope and fairlead and paint before re-wiring and replacing the solenoid box
  • Modify the bull bar for the winch
  • Relocate the transmission cooler to make way for the winch
  • Fit new Lightforce Striker 170 spot lights
  • Fit new LED 6″ parkers/driving lights
  • Fit new rear universal joints for the tail shaft
  • Install a turntable for the passenger seat
  • Fit hand controls, remote indicators, wiper switches and the flip up pedal to enable Jerome to drive
  • Fit new headlights, parkers and indicator modules
  • Re-fit bull bar and winch
  • Fit the interior frame up – to include slide out drawers, cupboards, and cubby holes
  • Modify the interior electrics
  • Install sound-proofing/insulative material on floors, walls and ceiling in the rear
  • Buy and fit new appliances to include stove, sink, water tank, gas bottle, hot water supply, fridge etc.
  • Make and fit fly screen and safety grille/mesh to rear windows
  • Make and fit curtains, foam bed and other soft furnishing
  • Fit side awning (taking from the Patrol)
  • Fit new rear awning
  • Fit new alloy roof cage
  • Make and fit exterior gas bottle and 20L water jerry can brackets
